The aim of this site is to help you learn to read Japanese by filtering news feeds and information on the web.

Hows it work?

We mash together your personal study information from readthekanji.com and information from kanji / japanese databases like kanjivg, Jim Breens JMDICT, and tatoeba.fr. Using some language processing magic, we then give you a filtered, set of news articles tailored to your interests and reading abilities.

How did this site come about?

This started as a private study tool that I wrote because I wanted to read the news in Japanese but there were often kanji I couldn’t understand. Of course I could look up words in a dictionary or surf news sites with rikaichan but I found both of these slowed me down and while I could understand the article, I lost my flow and it took away from the reading experience.

Starting October 2009, I'm opening the site up for general use and planning to expand the feature set quite a lot over the next few months.
